In the previous lesson, I explained how animals are classified using the 8 hierarchical categories of classification: domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. In addition to those, an animal may have a suborder, subfamily, and/or subspecies. Here, we will walk through the full classification of three different species: King Cobra, Lion, and Hammerhead shark.

King Cobra

  4. ClassReptilia (Reptiles)
  5. OrderSquamata (Snakes and Lizards)
  6. FamilyElapidae (Tropical/Subtropical Venomous Snakes)
  7. GenusOphiophagus (King Cobra*)
  8. SpeciesOphiophagus hannah (King Cobra)

*King Cobra is the only species in Ophiophagus because it is a monotypic genus, meaning made up of only one species.

Lion
